James Brandao is a Boston native. He studied animation at the NEIA and Illustration at MassArt and has been tattooing since 2014. James’ obsession with tattoos began after high school when he received my first tattoo, a black and gray memorial piece for his grandmother. The idea of making another persons idea, memory, interest, etc, a permanent piece of art on their body for life, has given him more than enough reasons to pursue a life-time commitment as a tattoo artist.James has a strong interest in black and gray, and attraction to bold, saturated color work.
His work is inspired by tattoo artists such as Jason Butcher and his death romantic style, Victor Portugal’s use of values, solid blacks and exposed skin to show depth in his work, Jun Cha’s insane use of soft gray shading to show form, as well as Empires very own Neil England and his use of strong bold line work and rich solid colors. Jeff Gogue, Justin Harris, Damian Robertson, James Tex, Anthony Tex, Justin Hartman, Emily Rose, Heather McLean and many other tattoo artist. Other inspirations range from comic book artist J. Scott Campbell, Hyper Realist painter David Kassan, Alphonse Mucha, and the list goes on and continues to grow. As it grows, James’s love for tattooing grows with it. In his own words “Grow on, flow on.”
